Ten Yad holds first Friend-Raising Gala
By Diane Koven
Ten Yad of Ottawa, a group of volunteers whose mission is simply to help those in need, was founded three-and-a-half years ago when Esti Fogel gathered together some friends to provide help and support for community members going through a difficult time. Having been ill herself some years ago, and having benefited from the help of friends and family, she realized how important such help can be. In its relatively brief existence, Ten Yad (Lend a Hand) has grown by leaps and bounds. Now a registered charity with an army of volunteers, the organization remains unaffiliated and independent but works co-operatively with other community agencies to meet common goals. When individuals
or families are facing acute, lifealtering situations such as illness or death – or the happy occasion of the birth of a child – volunteers will step in and provide food, transportation, child care or whatever is needed. In the midst of airplanes of all descriptions in the hall of the Canadian Aviation Museum, the inaugural Friend-Raising Gala for Ten Yad was held on January 29. Picture the scene: Between the planes sat
more than 350 people at elegantly decorated tables, some with candles burning in large crystal chandeliers, as the Central Band of the Canadian Forces Jazz Quintet – for several numbers, the Jazz Quintet plus Two – played klezmer and Yiddish-inspired tunes.
The gala showcased Ten Yad, introducing the organization to many members of the community who may not have heard much about it. It was also the venue for the launch of a new cookbook, From the Kitchens of Ten Yad, the sale of which will provide much-needed funds.
Keynote speaker Ari Schonbrun told his most remarkable tale of “lending a hand” as a survivor of the 9/11 attacks on the twin towers of New York City’s World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 where he was a senior executive at Cantor Fitzgerald. “Only one person walked out without a scratch, and you are looking at that person,” said Schonbrun of the firm’s 662 employees at work that day. “Six hundred and fiftyeight of my friends and co-workers were brutally murdered, simply because they were sitting at their desks, no other reason.” Three others were badly injured. Schonbrun described a series of coincidences on that fateful day, which led to his miraculously surviving the explosion and of how he helped a badly burned co-worker escape from the building and get to a hospital for treatment. “I was plucked out of a burning building … and somebody asked me why. I need to talk to people and tell people that we live in a world today that is going in the wrong direction and we aren’t doing anything about it. We need to make a change,” he said. Schonbrun said his personal priorities have drastically changed over the past 10 years. He no longer lives to work, but takes time to enjoy his family and to appreciate life itself. “The next time somebody calls you and asks you to help,” said Schonbrun, “just answer, ‘Ten Yad.’”

A beautiful dessert reception was provided by David Smith of Creative Kosher Catering, a long-time supporter of Ten Yad. Visit tenyad.ca or call 613-618-0485 for more information about Ten Yad.

Ten Yad to Celebrate Kindness at Gala
By Jack (Yankl) Botwinik
Three years ago, Ten Yad of Ottawa took flight and is now poised to soar higher. On Sunday, January 29, 6:45 pm, the inaugural Ten Yad Friend-Raising Gala will take place at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. The purposes of the event are to raise awareness of the charitable organization and the services it offers to Ottawa’s Jewish community, to publicly thank its many volunteers, and to inspire others to join. “It’s a friend-raising event,” said Debbie Scharf, event chair and vice-chair of Ten Yad’s Board of Directors. “Now that the infrastructure is in place, and we’ve got the experience, the time is ripe to take the organization to the next level.” Ten Yad – Hebrew for
lending a hand – is dedicated to relieving the stress on individuals and families during challenging or extraordinary times such as the arrival of a newborn, recovery from a medical emergency, a family move to Ottawa, etc. Among its activities, it co-ordinates volunteers to visit patients,
run errands, drive family members to hospital visits and help with meal co-ordination when necessary. Unlike other charitable organizations, Ten Yad only deals with acute situations, offering short-term assistance, usually for a two-week period.

Ten Yad has grown greatly since becoming a registered charity in 2009. It now has more than 200 volunteers with about two-thirds involved in meal preparation and delivery, and about one third in giving rides, making hospital visits and grocery shopping. In 2011, Ten Yad volunteers provided assistance to almost 60 individuals or families in Ottawa. “The organization,” said Scharf,” is run entirely by volunteers, and they are from all expressions of Judaism.” At $36 per ticket, the proceeds from the gala will go directly to Ten Yad’s Circle Fund, which is geared to
helping the most vulnerable members of the community. The theme for the evening is “celebrating acts of kindness.” Keynote speaker Ari
Schonbrun, a survivor of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, will address Surviving 9/11 Through Selfless Acts of Kindness, and Rabbi Reuven Bulka, founder and chair of Ottawa Kindness Week, will offer a D’var Torah.
Other highlights of the evening will include a jazz performance by the Central Band of the Canadian Forces and hors d’oeuvres and a
dessert reception sponsored by Creative Kosher Catering. The Canada Aviation and Space Museum is an interesting and unique setting for a
Jewish event. Tables will be set up in the heart of the museum and attendees will be surrounded by huge, stunning aircrafts. People can
roam freely among the exhibits. Despite her full-time job, being a mother, and her other responsibilities, Scharf is devoted to the goals of Ten Yad. “Giving is not always supposed to be easy,” she said. “But it’s tremendous to see the impact on people’s lives.” Scharf believes that’s what draws volunteers to Ten Yad. Esti Fogel, founder and chair of Ten Yad, agrees. She never imagined the organization would grow so rapidly.
“Ten Yad has no agenda other than to do good. People want to be a part of it,” said Fogel. Scharf considers Ten Yad an important and much-needed safety net for Jews in Ottawa. “When people are having a difficult time, they think, ‘I have a community and I’m not alone.’ This is the most beautiful thing about Ten Yad.” To purchase tickets to the gala, or for further information, contact Ten Yad at 613- 618-0485 or info@tenyad.ca.

The three pillars on which the world stands are Torah, avodah and gemilus chassadim. The Jewish community of Ottawa, Ontario,
the capital of Canada, is a close-knit kehillah with several institutions of Torah and avodah, including a kollel, three Jewish day schools, a yeshivah high school, Chabad, and several shuls. In addition, the approximately fifteen thousand Jews of Ottawa, including hundreds
of shomer Shabbos families, look out for each other in many ways. The community has always had a caring atmosphere, but about three years ago, Mrs. Esti Fogel, a native of South Africa and a resident of Ottawa for the past twenty-three years, felt it was time to set up a more formal, organized chessed network. She and several other like-minded people developed Ten Yad, an organization dedicated to making sure that Jews
in Ottawa who need help get it and that no one is left out.
Circle of Support
Ten Yad was established about three years ago and obtained official charitable status in 2009. Its mission is to help individuals and families in all segments of the Jewish community — whether they are affiliated or not — in life-altering situations, such as following a birth, or chas
v’shalom, a death or illness. “The organization was established to meet a particular need that was not being addressed in an organized way. People were always willing to help on an individual basis, but I noticed that when it was left up to the neighborhood, people did
not always get the help they needed. People might get too much food for Shabbos one week and nothing the second week, or lasagna for three nights in a row when they were lactose-intolerant,” said Mrs. Fogel. “In big cities like New York, there are enough people within each subcommunity to create its own bikur cholim. However, in Ottawa, we don’t have those kinds of numbers. With Ten Yad, we all
help each other, and the organization becomes a catalyst for unity by erasing the distinctions among different groups.”
Ten Yad provides assistance to those in acute situations who need help for a limited period of time through its “Circle
of Support.” Every neighborhood is assigned a group of coordinators. The program operates on the premise that social support and connection to a community is crucial in helping a person in a difficult situation return to his normal routine. When an individual or family needs
Ten Yad’s services, a neighborhood coordinator calls up and asks that person for names of his/her friends, relatives, and neighbors, and then tries to get those individuals to serve as the Circle of Support and provide what is needed. In this manner, the recipient is more comfortable
with the help that he/she gets and feels emotionally strengthened by the support of his friends and relatives. If a person does not have a large-enough circle of support, there is a pool of volunteers who are always willing to pitch in. One of Ten Yad’s main functions is providing meals for those who are ill, have just had a baby, or are otherwise incapacitated. Those who provide the meals must meet basic standards of Yiddishkeit and kashrus. In addition, a caring volunteer who cannot make a meal him/herself can sponsor meals made by a local kosher caterer at a very low cost. Ten Yad also provides other services, such as help with carpools and babysitting.

Kosher Pantry
Ten Yad continues to find many ways to assist the Ottawa community. It has a kosher pantry stocked with non-perishable food items, such as grape juice, matzah, tuna fish, granola bars, and instant soups. The pantry also contains electric candles for Shabbos lighting, siddurim,
Chumashim, a Jewish family directory, and other reading materials. The pantry helps individuals who find themselves in the hospital with a loved one completely unprepared, and it reminds them during these lonely periods that someone really cares. There is currently a pantry in
Queenway-Carleton Hospital, as well as on the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital. The construction of the pantry on the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital is scheduled to be completed shortly, and Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ottawa will soon be added to the list of sites offering this service.
Bikur Cholim
The Bikur Cholim division organizes visits for those who are in the hospital or in a nursing home, or who are homebound due to illness. Bikur Cholim is steadily increasing its inventory of services, including respite care.

Welcome to Ottawa
Moving to Ottawa? Ten Yad gladly welcomes new families to town. Recognizing that there are many challenges associated with a move, Ten Yad has prepared customized relocation assistance packages for different neighborhoods. The package includes some basic home necessities, as well as a handy resource guide with useful addresses, telephone numbers and websites. Welcome packages are available for each of the Jewish community’s neighborhoods, including Alta Vista, Craig-Henry-Centrepoint, Westboro, and Barrhaven.

Urgent … Shabbos Transportation
With the help of the Szirtes family at Ottawa’s Westway Taxi, Ten Yad has made arrangements for those in urgent situations to get taxi transportation to medical services on Shabbos and Yom Tov. Westway Taxi drivers will open and close the car doors for passengers when
they get in or out of the vehicle, and will also carry passengers’ bags. The driver is advised by the dispatcher that the taxi fare will be reconciled through Westway Taxi and that the passenger should not be asked for payment.

Chevrei Tehillim
In an effort to tap into the power of tefillah, Ten Yad of Ottawa has formed a Chevrei Tehillim Team (CTT), which stands ready to offer support and comfort to those who are facing a critical medical situation. The team is comprised of a group of thirty committed individuals, along with
fifteen back-up members, who will collectively recite the complete Sefer Tehillim as a zechus for an individual who is undergoing a serious procedure. The program is intended mainly for Ottawa residents but has also been used during times when extra tefillos are needed for situations in Eretz Yisrael.
Mi K’amcha Yisrael!
Mrs. Fogel continues to run the organization with great dedication, spending a large portion of each day coordinating its many projects. It is heartwarming to see Yidden in communities large and small care for their brethren. Mi k’amcha Yisrael!

April, 2010

Ten Yad Kosher Pantry Opens at Queensway Carleton Hospital
Ten Yad of Ottawa is very pleased to announce the opening of the Kosher Pantry at the Queensway-Carleton hospital campus.

The Queensway-Carleton hospital can provide kosher food for patients. However, caregivers and family members have limited access to kosher food on site. This can be a particular challenge when a family member is admitted, in an emergency situation or during Shabbat. The Kosher Pantry, located in the hospital cafeteria, is stocked with an assortment of non-perishable food items, electric candles and grape juice for Shabbat along with siddurim, chumashim and other religious and inspirational items.

Ten Yad is most grateful to Joel and Gaye Taller, who have so generously sponsored the Kosher Pantry project in memory of Lillian and Archie Taller, OBM.

Through her dedication, Tamara Scarowsky transformed the idea of the Kosher Pantry into a reality and we now look forward to the leadership of Sarah Holland, who will oversee the day-to-day operation of the Kosher Pantry together with our KP “shopper”, Chana Esther Dayan. Ten Yad benefited from a wonderful working relationship with the Queensway-Carleton hospital staff, who recognized the need for this service and helped us “make it happen”. With the assistance of Maureen Molot, Ten Yad looks forward to the formal opening of Kosher Pantries at the other campuses of the Ottawa Hospital system in the very near future.

Ten Yad Newsletter (February, 2010)

It’s Official!

You’ve been hard at work cooking, driving, grocery shopping and caring for those in need and your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Following a lengthy application process, the Canada Revenue Agency agrees that your work – and ours – is indeed “charitable”. We are delighted to announce that we have attained official designation as a registered charitable organization!

Making it Easier for you to Give
As a registered charity, we can now offer tax receipts for donations and gifts. For your convenience, we have created a simple reimbursement form for the expenses you incur while carrying out our charitable activities, such as cooking for families in need. The form allows you to gift the value of those expenses to Ten Yad, for which you will receive a tax receipt. For more information, contact your neighbourhood Ten Yad coordinator.

Wanted: Compassionate, Caring Individuals
We are now working on developing a Ten Yad Bikur Cholim division (TYBC) – to assist anyone in the Jewish community who is hospitalized or housebound during an acute illness. The focus of this division will be to coordinate volunteers to visit isolated patients, help with errands and drive family members to and from the hospital where necessary. Since our current database is geared towards meal preparation, it is somewhat limited to those who do our gourmet, customized kosher cooking. When it comes to TYBC, we are looking for any compassionate and caring individual who may want to lend a hand. Please let us know if you would like to be added to our list of TYBC volunteers or if you think of anyone else who might be a good fit!

Coming Soon…

…to a Computer near You
We have a website in the works, which will make it easier for you to stay informed, request tax receipts and get more involved. We will let you know when it’s up and running – but we expect to be on-line very soon.

…to a Hospital near You
Talks are underway to set up “Kosher Pantries” in the hospitals around town. These will be stocked with non-perishable kosher food, as well as the essentials for Shabbos and basic religious items (e.g., Siddurim) which one may need in a pinch. We are hopeful that the hospitals’ administrators will be supportive and that the Kosher Pantries will be available in short order. We will keep you posted on all the developments!

Remember to Keep us in the Loop!
We can only respond to a need in the community if we know about it! If you think there is a situation where Ten Yad could be of assistance, don’t hesitate to contact a Ten Yad coordinator – who will be able to assess the situation and come up with an appropriate plan of action.
